Clearly, Union backed Trustees Marilyn Anderson, Tricia Quintero, and Carrie Buck did not want to talk about the issue of biological boys competing in girls' sports. They demanded that Acting Interim Superintendent Allan Mucerino not permit Trustee Leandra Blades' Resolution to be on the April 8 agenda.
Acting Supt. Mucerino allowed the Resolution to be discussed as agenda item 18.3 on May 6. This 36 minute discussion may be one of the most dramatic confrontations in recent PYLUSD history. The board majority had carefully crafted their response, led by Trustee Buck.
Ms. Buck began by declaring that Trustee Blades RESOLUTION clearly violated the LAW..well, maybe California Ed Code, perhaps the one that prohibits school boards from expressing an opinion. Ms. Buck introduced a counter RESOLUTION that interestingly had not been placed on the agenda. But that violation didn't seem to concern Supt. Mucerino or the board majority.
Ms. Buck proceeded to unleash a tsunami of "Whereas" clauses followed by a second wave of "Therefore, be it resolved" statements that sounded very close to a legal document that she had just condemned as illegal. Ms. Blades quickly responded that this replacement Resolution was nothing more than the status quo.
Trustee Quintero entered the fray by declaring her unwavering support for girls and their sports and why the participation of boys in girls' sports posed no threat whatsoever to any girl. Trustees Blades and Frazier continued to challenge this claim requesting that the board at least take a stand on the Resolution, which did not violate the law. But what could they offer as proof?
Ironically, Board Attorney Todd Robbins came forward suggesting that a minor word change would make Ms. Blades' Resolution perfectly acceptable. A brief recess allowed Robbins' amendment to be printed. On reconvening, Ms. Buck restated her opposition and Board President Anderson, declaring that she like MS. Quintero, ran for the board to support ALL students, stated that she would err on the side of kindness for the most marginalized, and suicidal.
Ms. Blades said, Let's vote. They did. Motion to adopt the Resolution to oppose the participation of biological boys in girls' sports defeated, 3-2.
